Built in 1898, Union station is a magnificent Romanesque Revival structure that originally served Montgomery as a train station and has been beautifully restored thanks to the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the City of Montgomery. It now serves as the Montgomery Area Visitors Center, where you'll find the Montgomery Convention & Visitors Bureau, Montgomery's official gift shop "The Depot" and Lek's Taste of Thailand restaurant. Union Station has been a popular spot in the city and is even more popular now with the recent development of Montgomery's riverfront. It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1973. In it's hayday, more than 44 trains would stop at the station each day. The adjacent "Train Shed" is one of the few surviving structures of its type from the 1800's. |
